What’s it like to be a BBVFD Member?

Volunteering is a big commitment, but it is also incredibly rewarding.

It takes courage, determination and a lot of heart to put the needs of others ahead of your own- but the rewards of service outweigh the inconveniences.

It is hard, sweaty, dirty, wet work. It can even be scary at times. But you will never be alone, and someone will always have your back. You will push your boundaries, gain new skills, work new muscles and make new friends who become like family.

We have room in those shiny red trucks, should you wish to challenge yourself and answer the call.

We onboard our successful recruit candidates starting each January.

Recruits train each Monday night from 7 pm to 9 pm.  You’ll be introduced to the principles of fire dynamics, learn how the department operates, and be trained on the equipment and tools needed to get the job done. In addition, further certifications like CPR / First Aid, Air Brakes, ICS and Wildfire take place on other weeknights or weekends.

After 4 months, recruits join the ranks of the other volunteers, and training switches to Tuesday nights from 7 pm to 9 pm.  While you’re not expected to attend every single training night, there is an expectation to maintain a high percentage of attendance and participation. Opportunities and events beyond our core curriculum are offered throughout the year and tracked in our online calendar.

We also have a variety of committees, including the social committee, and specialty teams for Rope Rescue, Extrication, Medical and Wildfire. Members can also join the Joint Health & Safety Committee and our Britannia Beach Volunteer Association’s Board of Directors.

Once qualified, recruits are able to respond to call-outs which can take place at any time and at any hour. We don’t operate on a schedule- members attend call-outs when they’re available. We attend to approximately 100 call-outs per year. We use Who’s Responding, an app that can be downloaded onto any Smart Phone. You never know what’s going to happen and need to be prepared for all possible scenarios, at any time.

Also, please note that we are a VOLUNTEER fire department, and our members do not get paid for their time and contributions. However, we offer a variety of recognition initiatives and swag for our members as well as occasional social events. Our deepest reward is from the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.

If you think you’re interested in answering the call, we’d love to have you join us.

Please reach out as we’re happy to answer any questions you may have.
